Why do dictators get away with murder?

There must be some problem with the human mind that makes it stop working properly when it is met with a murdering dictator? As Stalin once said:"When one man is killed it is a tragedy...when a million are killed it is a statistic." Why did so many people support Hitler at his time, masses and masses of people supported a criminal for so long. This is also going on in my homeland. So many people where murdered but he remains a hero to many as they identify brutality with power. Is it that the mind is overwhelmed by the foulness of the actions that it shortciruits on logic? I despise anyone who would support a murderer, there is no excuse at all. Actually these people rule by perpetuating hate and xenophobia in their land. Murder cannot be validated by such actions no matter how much government bureaucracy its wrapped up in, and no matter how well it fits into political strategies. Countries that support despotic regimes are even worse as they base foreign policies on murder and destruction. I guess it doesn't matter as long as the killing is happening somewhere else.
It is the man on the street worldwide that I am most disappointed in. We make so many excuses for everyman like; he doesn't have the right information; he doesn't know; he is brainwashed but now I see what I have been avoiding to acknowledge all along and that the human mind is a cowardly, illogical, irrational and emotionally dominated, falling very short of its potential.

I think humanity is like nature, always struggling for balance between competing interests, and split 50/50 between those prone to lean toward the light and those prone to evil. That's why I think it's good that you diss dictators here, and try to convince people in the middle to lean toward the light and point the world in the right direction.
I like the title of your blog, too: I've felt like a stranger from another planet myself...
I thin I know what you are speaking about..........................................................
All governments are corrupt. Strangely they all state that their is democracy, even colonel gadafi recently stated that his country was the only real democ5ratic country in the world,
I just so want to laugh.
Sometimes they don't, military coups and stuff generally leave them to sticky ends.
Sometimes other people, put up with them because they can get stuff done, and/or their own organisation and power cannot compete. eg. colonel Gadaffi has pulled of a multi billion dollar project since the 1980s to help his people have water, mining and piping undergraound supplies from the south to the north of libya. Would leaders whose prowess is tribal allegiance getting mixed with mob links manage to secure the public interest in such a way?
Just wanted to give an example of how they can do good as well.
Democratically processed/appointed leaders get away with murder too.
So long as any leaders foreign and economic policies are subservient it is safe these days.
Maybe the difference between the more functional and dysfunctional countries are also the publics that they serve,
-the cr@p that it will tolerate
-the courage that it has (somewhere between the extremes of being a fool and being a pansy)
-long term stability and wise planning
-history of recent imperialism
anyway...just a rant
I hope you are not defending the concept of a dictatorship. Look, If a just and honest person takes absolute power then his rule would be just and honest...theoretically. I find very few examples of anything like that. And please don't give me examples of Gaddaffi as an ideal dictator, getting water for his people doesn't erase his human rights abuses.
